First, you must be a minimum of 17 yrs of age to learn to drive a car on the road.
If you get or have applied for the enhanced rate of the mobility component of the Personal Independence Payment (PIP) then you will be able to learn to drive at the age of 16 yrs.
You can apply for you provisional to drive a car at 16 yrs and 9 months by either applying online by filling in the D1 form at the DVLA website or by getting a D1 form from the Post Office.
To be able to drive your eyesight must be able to pass the minimum standard of eyesight (With glasses or contact lenses if used). The requirement is to read a motor vehicle number plate in good daylight at 20m (65ft) or 20.5m (66ft) for the old-style number plate.
Theory Test
To be able to complete your practical driving test you must first sit the theory test. This can be done whilst taking driving lessons. The theory test is split into two sections.
1. You must answer 50 multiple choice questions and to pass you must get a minimum of 43 correct.
2. You will be shown 14 video clips containing various hazards which you have to identify. You will be marked out of 75 and must get a minimum of 44 marks to pass.
How many lessons will I need?
National average according to the DVSA is 45 hours with an approved driving instructor and is always beneficial to practice privately, around 22 hours is recommended. Private practice however can only be done if the car is insured properly for the learner and the supervisor is over 21 years old and has held a full UK licence for 3 years.
The vehicle must also display Red L-plates one on the front and one on the rear which can be clearly visible.
